New Conservatory at Old Park House, Alton Road, Farnham 1996
Waverley Design Award Commendation 1997
The client's brief included the construction of a conservatory attached to an existing Edwardian coach house, a Well House and related landscaping.
The design of the conservatory is based on a cruciform plan, and by forming an arched opening through an existing estate wall the formal garden to the south is joined by the northern portico to the lightly wooded and informal landscape to the north.
The structure is supported off reconstituted stone columns and corbels. The framed structure is traditional green oak carpentry with double glazed softwood joinery painted in traditional linseed oil based paint. The floor finish is imported French Pierre d'Aix from Provence and the clay facing bricks were obtained from East Anglia. The rainwater conduits are steel anchor chains taking the rainwater from lead gutters to a gravel filled French drain.
